Patsideros is therefore located at a distance of 29 kilometers from the city of Heraklion and at an altitude of 480 meters, amphitheatrically built on the eastern ridge of the hill, in a location with a unique view of the Libyan sea. The settlement has been continuously inhabited for centuries now, at least since the period of the late Venetian rule, from which its oldest mention survives, in a document from the 16th century. Although the origin of the name of the village is not known, oral traditions associate it with the settlement of the Lord "patsis", who came to the island together with other lords in the 10th century, during the recapture of Crete by Nikephoros Phokas. However, this has not been confirmed to date.
Patsideros played an important role in the liberation struggles of the island, as it was a glorious captain's village, with its famous chieftains and hainides. South of the settlement rises the honored Korakia peak, which was a guerilla hideout during the German occupation.
In the modern settlement of Patsideros there are today several churches, of which the Byzantine church of Panagia in the east of the village is of particular interest. In its courtyard, the ruins of a historic primary school, which operated in the late Ottoman period, are still preserved.
On the eastern edge of the village of Patsideros, at a lower altitude than the settlement, is the one-room church, which was built in 1695, according to the date engraved on the outer door. It is a post-Byzantine church of the royal style, which was originally a monastery catholicon with three cells and until 1866 was dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin. In its surroundings, there was a school, where students from the settlement, but also from the wider area, studied. But both the monastery and the educational institution were repeatedly set on fire in the 19th century by the Ottomans.
Today the renovated church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and is celebrated on September 8, but also on August 15, the day of her Assumption. Inside, it retains, from its original pictorial decoration, the fresco of the "Platytera of the Heavens" that occupies the dome of the church, as well as three icons of the Virgin Mary on the holy iconostasis.
