The town is friendly and very welcoming, with small local shops and many sidewalks with taverns and cafes around. Walking is possible, as there are many cobblestones in town, as hiking, such as a variety of trails and gorges, are available very close by. There are many choices of beautiful beaches that are very close to the town of Ierapetra and the beach of Myrtos. The island of Chrysis, famous for its beaches, is a 40-minute ferry ride away. Diving, sailing, cycling and horse riding are available. There are archaeological sites, such as the cave of Dikaios, the Minoan city of Gourni, the Minoan path, the old bridge of Myrtos and the city of Zakros. The island of Spinalonga in Elounda and the archaeological museum of Ierapetra.
